| Weight | Description and example |
| Light, new-style | These young wines are juicy with no tannin made by carbonic maceration and released very soon after the harvest. The most famous of this kind is the Beaujolais Nouveau. "Unfinished wine" to some critics, and "delicious" according to others. |
| Low tannin young | These wines are best drunk young. They are frech and light, full of juicy fruit and have more strukture than "light, new-style". In this category you find the basic Burgundy. For example: Bourgogne Rouge, light Pinot Noirs, Alto Adige, Bardolino and many Beaujolais, the lighter Crus. |
| Cool climate, medium-weight | Contrry to what one might think, cool climate result in elegant red wines. Basic Bordeaux like Petit Chateaux wines is the most typical one. However, the red Loire from good vintages also qualifies for this category. Outside France, the best German wines and Washington State reds finds their place here as well as many wines from New Zealand. |
| Warm climate, medium-weight | Just as with cultures, warm climates produce richer, plummier and earthier flavors in red wine. However, these wines have similarities in weight to those in cooler climates, though they are spicier and may be more rustic. Examples are; Cahors, Dâo, Madiran, Bairrada, most Pinotage, southern French vins de pays, Penedés and Côtes du Rhone. |
| Spicy | Heavyweight wines grown in warm climates, packed with spice and earth, plums and oak. The biggest Shiraz and Rhône wines fit in here. Others are the top Zinfandels, Barolos, Barberas, California Syrahs and the biggest Mexican wines |
| High scale elegance | These are the "great" wines, the heavyweights with elegance!! Wines with this sort of concentraion and refinement don't come cheap. They need time to age in bottle. Thus, most Classed Growth red Bordeaux fall into this category, as do top Californian wines and Australian Cabernets, big Riojas some burgundies and the bigger Côte d'Or. |
| Sweet | Italy is dominating this category with its startingly and bittersweet Recioto della Valpolicella and graphy Aleatico |
